The world can thank Australia for a number of wonderful inventions - from Google Maps and electric drills to Wi-Fi (yes, really!) and the cochlear implant. We're a clever bunch, really, and when you apply that innovative culture to food, positively wonderful things can happen.
Here are just a few examples of foods that were invented right here in Australia.
A tiny pastry pie filled with sweet cream, then topped with two-toned icing - the Neenish Tart truly is a modern marvel.
This classic Aussie favourite is the brain child of New South Wellian Ruby Neenish, who, according to legend, invented this sweet treat in her Grong Grong kitchen more than 100 years ago in 1913. As the story goes, she didn't have any cocoa left for chocolate icing (it's happened to us all), so she simply changed the colours instead! While this particular story is somewhat debated, it seems clear that the tart was indeed invented somewhere in Australia.
FreakShakes have been taking over the world lately, but did you know that they were invented right here in the Lucky Country? It's hardly surprising, really, when you consider our love of food, creativity, and knack for being one step ahead. Canberra lass Anna Petridis is the name behind this marvellous invention, as she first introduced the idea in her cafe, Patissez.
And in case you've been living under a rock lately (or just need a reminder of why you should get in to AMF Bowling and try one), a FreakShake is like a milkshake on steriods. You've usually got milk and ice cream, but along with that, you've got treats stacked on top, such as marshmallows, pretzels, honeycomb, macarons, brownies, and more.
Look, we don't want to start a war here, but we're pretty sure Australia invented the Pavlova (not New Zealand).
The thing is, when Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova toured Australia (alright, and New Zealand) back in 1926, a chef by the name of Herbert Sachse in Western Australia whipped up a recipe that was fitting for such a high-calibre dancer. Light as air and sweet, the Pavlova has been a much-loved Aussie classic ever since. Well, that's the story we choose to believe anyway!
Is it a coincidence that all of these foodie breakthroughs are desserts? Probably not, but hey, we'll always have Vegemite!
